Beautiful, unexpected place. Don't believe it takes 3 hours, because you'll want to spend closer to 6. Nice places to stay on the southern end of the gorge, which you may not realize by talking to the visitors center.
Best place in Utah for fishing, camping and boating. We camped in red canyon rim and it was one of the best camp sites we ever camped in, it was mid July with no trace of mosquitoes at all, cool breezes at night and magnificent views in the morning at the canyon. We didn't find any trouble finding a spot plus we were told that dispersed camping is allowed as long you try to find a spot that has been camped in before. We also tried rafting and fishing , flaming gorge is famous for a variety of fish so don't miss the chance to try catching a dinner while there.
We were driving from Jackson, Wyoming to Steamboat Springs, so we decided to explore this area and follow the Green River. Extraordinary scenery and seems less of a tourist place which pleased us immensely. We got to experience a beautiful night sky. Just loved the area!

Incredible location for fishing and boating with amazing views along with deep canyons like the Grand Canyon. I've been to Flaming Gorge twice and both times were times I`ll never forget with 10lb trout being caught and wildlife such as Moose and Antelope too see in the area. Rent a boat or bring yours for the best experience. It can get windy in the afternoons which can make the trip across the lake difficult. I spent most time on the Utah side which is smaller then the Wyoming side, either way Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is worth the trip for the whole family.
